Program Description
The chemistry major is designed to provide both the conceptual framework and practical experience necessary to prepare students for a career in chemistry and related fields, providing students with a strong, broad-based conceptual understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and associated laboratory skills, to foster effective, lifetime learners both in the classroom and after graduation. Graduates from the program have been employed in chemical industries, regulatory agencies, forensic laboratories, clinical laboratories, and schools. In addition, the chemistry major provides an excellent preparation for graduate studies in chemistry and chemistry-related fields, and the necessary foundation for entry into medical, dental, and pharmacy schools. Typically, half of the graduates attend graduate, medical, dental, or pharmacy school; with most of the remaining graduates obtaining careers in chemical analysis, chemical preparation, teaching, research, development, sales, management, regulatory agencies, and health professions. The biochemistry concentration in the chemistry major provides a great opportunity for students who seek entry into medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary schools, and physician assistant programs. In addition, graduates from the program have been employed in chemical industries, regulatory agencies, forensic laboratories, clinical laboratories, and schools. The traditional chemistry concentration will equip our students with chemistry concepts and laboratory skills who are interested in traditional chemistry careers in teaching, research, consulting, and various aspects of the chemical industry, or plan to attend graduate school in chemistry or biochemistry after graduation.
